Air filters are the easiest, yet most vital aspects of your home’s comfort. Unfortunately, they are also one of the most neglected. Despite them being one of the easiest pieces to inspect, remove, and replace, one of the most common mistakes homeowner make is leaving them until they’re filled with fluff. It may not seem that important until your system freezes. That’s right, freezes. Neglecting your air filter can lead to a host of issues, including your ac system freezing over.

It’s the common case of a little bit building up to a huge issue. Carpet fibers, dust, human and pet hair, and other particles get trapped within the filter, keeping it out of your home’s air. However, when it’s not replaced, the debris builds and builds until you have an uncomfortable home with unfiltered hair.

Do You Have a Bad Air Filter?

Thankfully, there’s an easy way to find out if your filter is good or bad. Remove your filter and hold it up to the light. If you see light passing through the filter then you’re good. If you can’t, it’s time to change it. Why? If light can’t pass through your vent, neither can air.

Air must pass through your vents in order for your AC or HVAC system to work properly. If that passage is blocked or narrowed, your system has to work harder to maintain your home’s temperature. A full filter that’s not changed regularly can lead to overworked and failing compressors or fans.

Air filters aren’t the only thing that’s neglected. Check out the 10 most common AC repair problems.

Filter FAQs

What Is MERV?

MERV, or Media Efficiency Rating Value, measures the efficiency of air filters. Any filter with a MERV rating of 8 or higher is very efficient at filtering out small, indoor pollutants, like mold spores.

What Does Filter “Width” Mean?

The width of the filter provides more surface area, allowing your air conditioning system to breathe more. We recommend that you stay wary of high MERV filters that are only 1” thick as these filters may restrict your system and harm major components.
