How Does a Humidistat Work?

Humidistat Graphic
Humidistats work very similarly to thermostats. The difference is while thermostats respond to air temperature, humidistats respond to relative humidity. There is a sensor in the humidistat that is moisture sensitive. It uses this moisture to manipulate an electrical current that signals to the AC when it should turn on and off.

Why Should I Be Concerned About Humidity?

While humidity makes the air feel warmer, it also has other effects on the home. Homes with a high relative humidity are more susceptible to:

  • mold
  • mildew growth
  • dust mites

All of these can cause residents to fall ill. Warm, humid environments where dust mites thrive can cause severe allergic reactions. It is recommended for the humidity inside your home to range from 25-60%, according to the Thermal Environmental Conditions for Human Occupancy.

How Will a Humidistat Help Me?

Think about the weather here in Southwest Florida in the summertime. One of the first words that come to mind might be “hot”. And yes, while it is hot in Florida, we also have a high relative humidity, which can make it feel even hotter!

Humidity is the amount of moisture in the air, in relation to how much moisture the air could hold. With summertime being the hottest AND rainiest season in Florida, it creates a hot weather double-whammy.

How does this affect us? Well, people are constantly looking for ways to beat the heat. The most popular way to do so would be good old Air Conditioning. Sometimes, however, just air conditioning isn’t enough to control the humidity in your home. This leads to warmer feeling temperatures and increases the risk for mold and other growth within the home.

Fear not- there is a way to control the humidity in your home! In addition to the thermostat, there is a humidistat, as part of a whole home dehumidification system. Here is how a humidistat can be useful for you.
